____________
NEW FEATURES
1. Enhanced scanning for removal of CAP macro viruses.
2. VirusScan includes full support for Mac OS 8 and
System 7.x. VirusScan's new user interface complies
with Apple's Appearance Manager specification.
3. VirusScan's macro virus scanning technology has been
enhanced.
4. Text-to-speech support for virus detection alerts
allows you to notify users with custom text or voice
messages.
5. VirusScan for Macintosh can scan Macintosh name
spaces on Novell NetWare servers.
6. Performance enhancements have improved VirusScan's
scanning speed significantly.
7. VirusScan can notify network administrators about
virus infections via AppleScripts pre-written for
the Qualcomm Eudora and Claris E-Mailer e-mail
client applications. An included sample AppleScript
allows you to customize e-mail notification via your
preferred e-mail client application.
8. VirusScan no longer notifies you that it has excluded
the FingerPrint file, or any other file you have
chosen to exclude, from a scanning operation.
9. You may prevent VirusScan from examining network
volumes mounted on your Macintosh desktop or disable
all VirusScan functions from the Admin Information
dialog box.
10. You may password-protect all information and settings
you enter into the Admin Information dialog box in
order to prevent unauthorized changes.
11. Network administrators with corporate VirusScan
licenses can use McAfee's Customizer application to
pre-configure VirusScan for distribution.
____________
KNOWN ISSUES
1. When encountering a file infected with a Concept virus,
it sometimes takes multiple cleanings to remove it.
2. VirusScan falsely identifies the Berkeley Systems
AfterDark module "Nirvana" as the Nirvana virus. If
you use this AfterDark module, you should add it to the
exclusion list.
3. VirusScan does not automatically create a log file
if you simply specify a log file other than the
default in the Action tab. To create a new log file
for VirusScan to use, start a text editor (such as
SimpleText or TeachText), then name and save an empty
file. Next, select the Extra Log File checkbox in the
Action tab, then choose your new log file in the
directory dialog box that appears.
4. When scanning compressed files, you must select the
Scan in Compressed Files option. If you scanned a
compressed file without this option selected, you
will need to trash the VirusScan Fingerprints File,
restart your computer, and rescan the file with the
Scan in Compressed Files option selected. In a
standard installation, the path for the VirusScan
Fingerprints file is System Folder:Preferences:VirusScan.
5. Uninstalling VirusScan from your computer deletes all
VirusScan files, but leaves an empty VirusScan folder
in the Preferences folder in your System folder. To
delete this folder, drag it to the Trash. If you use
a custom installer created with the Customizer
application, you must also delete the scan tasks stored
in the Scan Tasks folder.
6. To cut, copy or paste text in the Task Description
dialog box, use standard Macintosh keyboard shortcuts.
Editing commands are unavailable when you have the
Task Description dialog box open.
7. Opening an alias to a file with a call from an
AppleScript applet will crash VirusScan. As a
workaround, be sure to call the actual file, not an
alias, from AppleScript applets.

USING PRESCAN
Use Prescan to ensure that your system is virus-free before
you install VirusScan. To launch Prescan, double-click the
Prescan icon located on the VirusScan CD-ROM, on the Prescan
floppy disk or, if you downloaded the VirusScan files, in
the folder where you saved the files you decompressed.
Next, click Scan to scan your hard disk for viruses; click
Clean to remove virus infections from your hard disk. For
maximum security, you should scan all drives on your
computer before you install VirusScan.
If you do not run Prescan before you began your installation,
the VirusScan installer asks you if you want to clean your
computer before you install VirusScan. Click Yes to perform
this scan operation.
Note: This first scan operation will take some time, as will the
first scan you perform with VirusScan. Subsequent scans will
proceed much more quickly. The amount of time the scan
operation takes will depend on how large your hard disk is
and how fast your computer operates.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Can VirusScan scan all my volumes at once?
A: Yes, you can select all volumes on your desktop, and
drag and drop them onto the application icon.
Q: Does VirusScan for Macintosh detect macro viruses such
as the Concept virus?
A: Yes. VirusScan for Macintosh finds all current
Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel macro viruses.
Q: Can macro viruses written on a PC infect a Macintosh?
A: Yes, some can. Any computer, including a Macintosh,
that can run Microsoft Word 6.x or later is
susceptible to macro virus infections.
Q: When I use Config Wizard to modify my customized
settings, does VirusScan save my previous scan tasks?
A: No. When you use Config Wizard to modify your settings,
VirusScan automatically clears old tasks.
Q: Can a virus on a floppy disk still infect my computer
if I have a task configured to scan floppies?
A: Possibly. If you double-click a program or a file on
a floppy disk before VirusScan has finished scanning
that disk, you risk starting an infected application,
which might infect your computer. For maximum
protection, configure a task to scan files as they
launch; this supplements the task that scans floppy
disks. These two measures should eliminate the risk
of infection before VirusScan completes its floppy
disk scan.
Q: Will VirusScan scan encrypted or password-protected
compressed files?
A: No. In order to scan encrypted or password-protected
files, VirusScan would have to breach their security.
VirusScan maintains the integrity of that security by
not attempting to scan encrypted or password-protected
files. It will, however, tell you that it did not scan
them. You can scan encrypted files as you decrypt them
by creating a scan task that uses file modification as its
scan trigger. See "Scheduling Scan Tasks" in Chapter
4 of the VirusScan User's Guide for more information.
Q: Can I update the VirusScan for Macintosh virus
definitions to detect new viruses?
A: Yes. If you have Internet access, you can download
VirusScan for Macintosh update files from the
McAfee Web Site, the McAfee BBS, or from other online
service providers.
To download from the McAfee Web Site, follow these
steps:
1. Go to the McAfee Web Site (http:\\www.mcafee.com).
2. Click the Update DAT File button.
3. Scroll down, then select the update for the
Macintosh. Save the file to your Desktop.
To update your virus definitions, double-click the
new update icon. The update will replace the virus
definitions installed on your hard disk with new
updates so that VirusScan will detect new known
viruses.
Once you download it, you may distribute the update
icon on disk, as an e-mail attachment, or across a
network. If you need additional assistance with
downloading, contact McAfee Download Support at
(408) 988-3832.
